"Many people would like to see the world consume fewer resources, yet we constantly avoid the most obvious means of achieving that. When people buy less stuff, you get immediate drops in emissions, resource consumption and pollution, unlike anything we’ve achieved with green technology.” McKinnon
Consumption of new clothing is estimated to be higher in the UK than any other European country–26.7kg per person. This compares to 16.7kg in Germany, 16kg in Denmark, 14.5kg in Italy, 14kg in the Netherlands and 12.6kg in Sweden. BUT the UK has one of the highest collection rates of used clothes in the world (per head of population) according to the Textile Recycling Association charity shops diverted over 330,000 tonnes of textiles from landfill in 2017 and helped reduce carbon emissions by millions of tonnes a year by reusing and recycling second-hand clothes.
